- ABSTRACT Alcohol consumption is one of social behaviors in which males and females are universally distinct. Consequences of consumption are also different for each sex. Nevertheless, the magnitude of these differences fluctuates historical and culturally. In order to address this phenomenon, some explanations are based on its universality and other are focused on historical and cultural variability. From the point of view of universality, biological parameters, such as alcohol metabolism and average water content of males and female bodies have been analyzed. These factors, in turn, influence intoxication levels, unpleasant effects of alcohol and negative consequences on health. Taking into consideration variability, cultural factors have been the main considerations. Alcohol consumption is one behavior that has historically served the purpose of differentiation between gender roles. False stereotypes related to alcohol consumption among men and women affect the way in which societies try to control problems related to this consumption. That is the reason why we present an overview of the differences that have been pointed as well as of the modes in which they have been analyzed.
